name has a long association with the locality shown, during either the
medieval period or in more recent times. In some cases different septs
using the same surname arose in widely different areas. In other cases
migration due to war dispersed them.
County Galway was formed
from several kingdoms or territories. The O'Donnelans were chiefs of
Clanbrassil, The O'Kellys ruled Ui Maine, later Hy Maine. The Burkes (de
Burgo) were lords of Clanricarde. Maghullen was O'Flaherty territory and
their allies the Joyces held the lands north of Lough Corrib, known as
Joyces Country. The area to the north-east was part of O'Connor
Don.
Galway City and surrounding lands were owned by the powerful merchant
families the "Tribes of Galway".
